ARGO FLOATS
They are two types of floats:
10 Provors DO that sample temperature, salinity and oxygen;
3 Arvors that sample temperature and salinity.
These floats contribute to the international ARGO project, which aim is to observe the first 2000 meters of the oceans. Each float drifts at a parking depth of 1000 m and profile from 2000 m to the surface every 10 days for a period of at least 3 years. Data are transmitted via satellites each time a float reaches the surface.
PRESENT ARMS! Floats stored in their dedicated container.
DEPLOYMENT: Stephane and Bruno are deploying a PROVOR DO on the starboard side using a crane and with the help of the crew.
The float is released a few meters away from the ship hull using a release hook.
RELEASED: Once released, the float begins its mission. On the picture, one sees the orange antenna emerging from the sea surface and used for data transmission. Within an hour, the float will disappear from the surface and start its downcast to 1000 m.
