Sampling for the Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC)

Samples for CFC are taken every 2 stations at 13 levels of the water column.  The CFC data are used to calculate the age of the water masses and also to estimate the anthropogenic carbon uptake by the ocean.  The CFC samples are taken from the 12-liter Niskin bottles of the rosette into ampoules. Later, in the laboratory on board the ampoules are sealed with fire by adding pure nitrogen gas to avoid environmental contamination. The analyses of CFC will be done at the University of Bremen.
